Yesterday The Lion King marked its 19th year on Broadway.
Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 24 global productions have been seen by more than 85 million people.
Recently having played its 7,900th performance, The Lion King surpassed the original run of that other feline-themed musical, Cats, in 2015 to become Broadway’s third-longest-running show. The Lion King, which opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre, is now playing at the Minskoff Theatre in Times Square.
This is only the second show in history to generate five productions worldwide running 10 or more years.
Translated into eight different languages (Japanese; German; Korean; French; Dutch; Spanish; Portuguese; and Mandarin), productions of The Lion King can currently be seen in New York; on London’s West End; and in Tokyo, Hamburg, Mexico City, Madrid, Shanghai, and Scheveningen. It’s also on tour across North America.
